Chinese Necks & An Adams Apple

Everyone is born different. We can only be our authentic selves when we stop trying to fit in with everyone else.
July 18, 2024

I hate Chinese necks. First of all, they make me stiff and they accentuate my big head and secondly, they press too tightly against my Adams apple.
However, over the past few months, this fashion trend has taken over the market and redefined the modern closet of a regular Ghanaian man.
I like to be trendy. So the last time I took my materials to the tailor, I requested for a Chinese neck – the Chinese neck.
Anytime, I put these clothes on, I feel like I’m strangling myself. But, for the sake of fashion, I endure this death sentence for nearly three hours every Sunday.
Don’t blame me. I just want to fit in and honestly, I do think they look good on me.
Anyway, this just drives my mind to the fact that we all try to fit in a society where we were made to stand out. We go through the pains of pretending to be who we are not just so that we can fit in.
In this hopeless quest of impersonation, we sometimes lose ourselves and forget what we stand for. In an attempt to blend in with society, we put on charades of lies and deceit.
Friends, we are who we are. It’s okay to be different. It’s okay to turn your back against the crowd. It’s okay.
You don’t have to lose your comfort to please people who might not even care.
Just like my Chinese necks, the only who will suffocate is you.
So be simple. Be real. Be different. Be you.
